LOTE (Language other than English)

 

For all students, learning a language other than English offers the potential to develop:

  • Communication skills
  • Literacy
  • Analytical thinking
  • Intercultural awareness

                                                 

LOTE is introduced in Year 7 at Canberra High School. Students are able to choose French, Japanese or Mandarin. LOTE becomes an elective for Years 8, 9 and 10.

                      

The five strands of LOTE are:          

  • Speaking
  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Listening
  • Cultural Understanding

 

The LOTE curriculum is based on the Essential Learning Achievements:

  • The student uses a range of strategies to think and learn
  • The student acts with integrity and regard for others
  • The students contributes to group effectiveness
  • The student uses Information and Communication Technology effectively
  • The student reads effectively
  • The student writes effectively
  • The student critically interprets and constructs text
  • The student listens  and speaks with purpose and effect
  • The student communicates with cultural understanding

 

Overseas excursions are offered in Years 9 / 10 to provide enrichment, immersion and consolidation of the language.

Grade Descriptors

A – Outstanding Achievement

You have demonstrated outstanding achievement of the knowledge, skills and understandings expected.

B – High Achievement

You have demonstrated high achievement of the knowledge, skills and understandings expected.

C – Sound Achievement     

You have demonstrated sound achievement of the knowledge, skills and understandings expected.

D – Limited Achievement

You have demonstrated limited achievement of the knowledge, skills and understandings expected.

E – Very Limited Achievement

You have demonstrated very limited achievement of the knowledge, skills and understandings expected.

S – Status

Awarded to students where unavoidable circumstances have prevented assessment for an A-E grade.
