RATIONALE
There is increasing recognition of the importance of living an active, healthy life and of the need to make informed, responsible decisions. The education of children needs to cover the wide range of skills, knowledge and experiences which are necessary for their complete development into young adults.
A critical component of this whole person development is a general knowledge of health and physical well-being. This prepares students to become active and responsible members of society, allowing them to lead a fulfilling life making sound, well-informed choices regarding their health.
The Sport, Health and Physical Education program is designed to give students knowledge about their bodies and how they should be treated. It gives students basic information and skills involving a full range of sporting activities and encourages students to develop positive attitudes towards their health and physical activity. This involves a continuous link with numeracy and literacy components. Both the theoretical and practical components of this program are designed for students to use their literacy and numeracy skills to ensure that Health and Physical Education complements the development of the whole person.
The Health and Physical Education course at Canberra High School caters to the needs of all students at the school. Students across the broad spectrum of ability and interest are encouraged to participate to the best of their ability and units have been developed to meet the needs of the school’s diverse population.
BRIEF OVERVIEW OF CONTENT
In Years 7 and 8, all students participate in a series of compulsory Health and Physical Education units. There are No choices available in Year 7, however in Year 8 students will be able to elect into traditional PE, Get Active Girls, Active Boys or Introductory Outdoor Pursuits. (The number of choices offered will be dependent on staff availability and expertise.) Units are three weeks in length and cover a variety of sports with no sport repeated except Athletics and Dance. There is a focus on skill development and game sense as well as improving leadership and self-esteem. By participating in a diverse range of sports, we hope that all students may find something they enjoy and perhaps wish to pursue outside of school.
It is also compulsory for students in Years 9 and 10 to study this Key Learning Area. However, students do make choices as to which units they would like to study. All units are of semester length and students must have completed a minimum of three units by the end of year 10.
In year 9 the choices are:
· Sport Health and Physical Education 9A
· Sport Health and Physical Education 9B

SCHOOL SPORT
There are many opportunities for all students to involve themselves in School Sport as part of Sport, Health and Physical Education (SHAPE) curriculum. Involvement can be as a player, coach or manager, with many sports offered each term. Teams entered in the Interschool Sporting Competitions are based on student interest and staff availability for duty of care.
Canberra High School has enjoyed success in a number of these competitions over the years with recent strength being in Basketball, Football, Futsal, Rugby, Volleyball and the Athletics carnivals.
UNIFORM
All students, when participating in Physical Education, are required to change into the uniform consisting of Black Bottoms and Yellow Top (both need to be suitable for physical activity. Jeans will NOT be tolerated). The benefits of such a requirement are:
· Encourages preparation and organisation.
· Having a change of clothing that can be removed after activity promotes good hygiene.
· Placing different coloured braids over uniform coloured tops encourages easily identifiable groupings. In the physical education context this is beneficial as it
· Fosters teamwork (an integral part of skill development).
· Aids in ‘spatial awareness’ (crucial to effective participation in games).
· All Canberra High School sports teams are required to wear black bottoms as part of their uniform (a requirement by the ACT Secondary School Sports Association conditions of participation). To have it as part of the Physical Education uniform makes the transition from Physical Education class to Canberra High School representative easier and less costly.
· All students and staff are encouraged to abide by the Sport, Health and Physical Education faculty’s ‘Sun Smart Policy’ which encourages protection from the sun’s harmful effects. This includes wearing a suitable hat and the yellow polo shirt with a collar. We also advise that students carry their own water bottles to SHAPE classes.
