My staff and I would like to thank the parents who joined us for our first parent teacher evening of 2008 last Thursday. It was a pleasure to meet you all and we look forward to seeing you all for many more of these occasions. In particular we hope to see as many parents as possible at the P&C meeting on the 18/03/08.

Thank you again for the warm reception on Thursday night.

4 February 2008

Dear Parents and Guardians

On behalf of the staff I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the Canberra High School community and look forward to working with you in supporting the learning of your child over the course of the next four years.

I was recently promoted to the position of Principal at Canberra High School and I am very excited about the appointment.   I have been a member of the ACT Department of Education for over twenty years and taught in a number of settings, both at the high school and college sectors.  My last position was as Deputy Principal at Hawker College and I certainly became aware of the outstanding students being prepared for their college education through the programs at Canberra High School. I am certainly focussing on enhancing the learning programs for the students and introducing new programs that will provide greater opportunities for all students at Canberra High.

As your child settles into high school there will be a number of occasions for you to be involved with the school and I certainly invite you take the opportunity to support the school to enhance your child’s education. The Canberra High School Board and the P&C are always seeking greater parental involvement and I invite you to look at ways in which you may support their initiatives. Please consider active membership in these important parent forums and contact the school to register your interest. Meeting times are advertised in our newsletter and on the CHS webpage.

The Meet the Teacher Evening on Thursday 21 February from 5.00 pm to 7.00 pm will be the first event of the year and I invite all parents and guardians to come and meet with the teachers and begin to establish a relationship with the school community.

I would also like to take this opportunity to ask parents and guardians to continue to support the school programs through the early payment of the voluntary course costs. These payments provide valuable support in allowing the school to continue to provide quality education programs for our students.

Canberra High School CARES forms the basis of the approach in 2008.

C – Community

A – Attitude

R – Respect

E -  Excellence

S – Safety

This will ensure that the education programs and policies will support all students at Canberra High School in a very respectful, inclusive and challenging environment. The school uniform forms an important basis of these values and all students are requested to wear the correct school uniform.

For students entering high school is very exciting but often the first few weeks can be a little confusing and your assistance in supporting your child with the questions that they may have will certainly assist this transition. The students have two Year 7 Coordinators: Jakki Pyner and Michael Brandt. It is anticipated that both Jakki and Michael will be the coordinators for the following years and join your child on the progress through the years at Canberra High. The students will then be placed in an ACE group that will meet on a regular basis and this teacher will be the first contact for parents when communicating with the school. This is a small pastoral care group and will provide an ongoing support for students and parents. Students will be issued with a school diary and that has a lot of valuable information and I encourage you to read through it with your child to clarify some issues that mat be causing concern.

As part of the transition for students enrolling in Year 7 a camp has been organised by the staff that will support students to build an identity for the year group, challenging team building activities and an opportunity to experience different activities. I encourage all students to attend this camp at Jindabyne Sport and Recreation Centre from Monday 25 February until Wednesday 27 February. A note will also be issued today outlining the program of the camp. If there are any concerns regarding the camp please contact me as soon as possible.

The opportunities that are available at high school are varied and I encourage students to be involved in as many of the differing programs as possible. Think about being a member of the SRC, competing in sports representing the school, entering different academic competitions, being a member of the school band and ensembles. The first of these school wide activities will be the swimming carnival day on Tuesday 12 February at Jamison Pool and there will be a cost of $8 which covers pool entry and access to the water slides. This is a normal school day and students enjoy both competitive and fun activities. Students are divided into the four house groups and points are awarded to the houses by participation in all of the events. Students will be advised in their ACE group which team they are in and they will remain in that team for the entire time that they are at Canberra High.

The sporting houses are as follows:

DENMAN        -  RED                                                FISHER           -  BLUE

LYONS           -  YELLOW                                          GOWRIE         -  GREEN

Once again, welcome to all new parents, guardians and students to Canberra High School and the staff look forward to sharing the learning journey and experiences with you over the next four years of your education. Please contact me on 6205 7000 if you would like to discuss any concerns or ideas that you may have.
