Our Dance program is an elective unit for years 8, 9 and 10.

Year 8 Dance Unit - Exploring Dance

What Do Students Learn?

This one semester unit introduces students to dance. They learn a variety of styles including street, jazz, contemporary and creative.

Students develop skills in making, performing and appreciating dance.  They also learn about cultural change within society.

What Kind of Learning Activities Do Students Do?

Students create, refine and perform a variety of routines.  They also complete a series of theory sessions that help them understand the main elements of dance.

How Are Students Assessed?

The students are assessed on class work including choreographic skills, rehearsals, performance as well as assignment and theory work

Year 9 and 10 Dance Unit - Creative Dance Workshop

What Do Students Learn?

This is a senior school foundation unit that runs over one semester. The unit aims to improve skills in dance composition, creativity and innovation. It focuses on the origins, techniques and steps of a range of different dance styles.

Students experience the social and cultural importance of dance as an art form and as a method of communication.

What Kind of Learning Activities Do Students Do?

Students present a variety of short performances. They also act as a choreographer. They develop, then demonstrate and teach their routine to their peers.

How Are Students Assessed?

Students are assessed on class work including choreographic skills, rehearsals, performance as well as assignment and theory work.

Year 9 and 10 Dance Unit - Dance Festival

What Do Students Learn?

This is a one semester practical unit about Choreography and Performance.

Students learn the technical and practical processes for creating a major dance production.

Students experience the role of choreographer. The unit also emphasises teamwork and evaluating and sharing dance experiences.

What Kind of Learning Activities Do Students Do?

Students develop the dance concept, choreography, stage props, costume and make-up for a performance at the Ausdance Youth Dance Festival. They also produce a small group performance.

How Are Students Assessed?

The students are assessed on group and performance work and completing a journal and an assignment.

What Is the Cost?

This unit has a costume fee of approximately $50.
